The Golden Hurricane fell to Texas and Arkansas State in back-to-back weeks.
What makes TU’s back-to-back losses confusing is the product on game day hasn’t matched what the coaching staff says they’ve seen during the week on the practice field.
“Last week, we had a really good week of work and I was expecting us to come out and be different,” said head coach Philip Montgomery. “We have to translate what we’re doing in practice right now to what’s going to happen on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday.”
Slow starts have plagued the Hurricane. They were shut out in the first half against Texas and then, against Arkansas State on Saturday, after scoring on their opening drive, went nearly 29 minutes of game time before putting any more points on the board.

“Each individual person, all 11 guys, need to do their one job, block their one guy, and that’s just how we get down the field,” said offensive lineman Tyler Bowling.
But all is not lost, with conference play beginning Thursday at Temple. Coach Montgomery says he’s seen his team improve every week thus far, even if they may not be exactly where he’d like.
“I wish there was a magic wand I could wave and tell you exactly when that’s going to happen, but it’s going to get there,” said Montgomery. “Our guys are hungry for it.”
“We definitely need to get started on the right foot in conference,” said linebacker Cooper Edmiston. “No better way than to get it started on the road.”
