Police say a man shot in the head outside a Tulsa convenience store early Wednesday has died.

They say the victim, identified as 33-year-old Cedric Cotton, was pronounced dead at 8:12 a.m.

The shooting happened outside the QuikTrip at 11th and Garnett at about 2:42 a.m., and EMSA took Cotton to the hospital in critical condition.

Earlier in the morning, police reported the man had died, but then said there had been a miscommunication between officers so they accidentally gave News On 6 inaccurate information.

Homicide detectives said Cotton and a woman were walking out of the QuikTrip when a man in a red 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe pulled up and got into an argument with them.

The man in the vehicle, identified as 47-year-old Terry Markham, shot the victim in the head before leaving the parking lot.

Witnesses said Markham was wearing all red clothing and a red bandana. Detectives said he might be connected to a gang.

Sergeant Darren Bristow said this was not a random crime and the gunman was following the victim leading up to the shooting.

"When he noticed they were walking back toward their vehicle, he circled around, stopped briefly behind their vehicle, then, he circles around and points the front of his vehicle to the passenger side of their vehicle," Bristow said.

Police have recovered the Tahoe but are still searching for Markham. They believe he is armed.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 918-596-COPS.

This is Tulsa's 31st homicide of the year.

No names have been released.
