Thursday, Broken Arrow begins their quest for their first state baseball title since 2011, and the close-knit Tigers think they can do it.
The old saying is “familiarity breeds contempt,” and that is certainly not the case with the Broken Arrow Tigers.
"We all gel together and have fun in the dugout. We're all comfortable around each other," said Broken Arrow pitcher Brett Biggs.
No, the Tigers get along just fine.
Head coach Shannon Dobson said, "They've all played together for so long, that's probably the uniqueness of this group, but they play hard. They're gamers."
The Tigers will take that into the state tournament Thursday against Westmoore, the team that knocked them out a year ago.
"Just come out of the chute ready to go, jump on and get them going," Dobson said.
Pitcher Trey Wolfe said, "I'd say we take it serious once we get on the field, but we like to mess around a little bit, too."
The state tournament is a single-elimination, one-and-done style format, so they'll have to get serious quick, but the Tigers know a slow start in game one means their chances of adding another title disappears.
"I think, with our team, it's perfect because we know we should win every single game," Biggs said.
Wolfe, an ORU commit, will get the start in game one, pitching on his future home mound.
"There's always going to be pressure, no matter what in state, but, I think I can handle it. We got a good lineup, so I'm just going to have to pitch to my lineup," he said.
Dobson said, "We're hoping we stay hot and take it into the tournament."
