Police: Man Shot After Attacking Tulsa Security Guard With Pipe

Police said a man is in the hospital after he was shot by a security guard at a Tulsa QuikTrip Tuesday evening, April 24. The shooting happened at 9:20 p.m. at the convenience store at Admiral and Memorial.

Police said the man was trying to shoplift from the store when the security guard stopped him. He later returned to the store with a pipe and hit the guard before officers said the security guard shot him once in the torso.

The victim was found about a block from the store. EMSA took him to the hospital with what police say was a non-life threatening injury. 

TPD said QuikTrip stores are adding security at many locations because of situations like this.

"Sometimes these guys will go in, and if they can't make a quick getaway they start assaulting people - like we had in this instance," said Sergeant Shane Tuell, TPD.

Tulsa Police say witnesses backed up the security guard's statement. 

The security guard wasn't seriously hurt. Police questioned, then released him.

Sergeant Tuell said it could have ended very differently for the security guard.

"You don't know what blow, what strike is going to incapacitate you and then, the suspect now not only has the pipe but he has access to your weapon," he said.

The victim is expected to be OK.
