Volunteers answered the call of the Harris County Sheriff's Office and brought hundreds of boats to the Houston area overnight. News On 6 storm tracker Darren Stephens is staying near the Houston Premium Outlet Mall in Cypress, Texas, and he witnessed the amazing response.

When he went to sleep Monday night, Darren said the mall parking lot was a "ghost town."

"The entire parking lot was empty," he said. "When I wake up this morning and come out, there were hundreds - hundreds of boats organized and brought here through social media and news organizations."

The Sheriff's Department made a cry for help, and volunteers responded, he said.

"They're fixing to deploy into the hot spot areas to get people out of their homes, businesses and apartments."

Darren spoke to one man from Temple who came down with six to eight boats. Another man said his group got off work at 6 a.m. Monday in New Mexico and started driving to Texas.
