An unattended death in Okmulgee is being investigated as a homicide.

A badly decomposed body was discovered Monday night in a residence in the 200 block of South Osage, Okmulgee Police Chief Joe Prentice said in a news release.

Witnesses reported smelling a strong odor they normally associated with dead rodents.

As they investigated, they found the remains in the garage of the residence, police said.

Investigators did not initially find any obvious signs of trauma, but a medical examiner found such signs during an autopsy, police said.

An official cause and manner of death is still pending, but based on the findings, investigators suspect foul play.

The victim was identified as James "Jimmy" Richardson, 47, of Okmulgee.

Anyone with information regarding the homicide or anyone who has seen the victim in the past week is asked to contact the Okmulgee Police Department at 918-756-3511.
