Investigators said smoking is the likely cause of a fire that damaged the outside wall of an Owasso apartment building early Wednesday.
Owasso Fire Marshal Johnny Peterson says they got the call at about 12:30 a.m. at the Brookwood Apartments in the 1300 block of Ash Place, which is just north of 86th Street North.
They arrived to find smoke pouring from the back of the building. Peterson says the fire started in the awning near a second-floor balcony and was quickly put out.
Firefighters cut utilities to the building.
Peterson says everyone who lived in the building was given hotel vouchers for the rest of the night. Joseph Holloway talked to one group of neighbors who are staying together instead - seven in one apartment.
They said they are just thankful everyone made it out of the building safely.
Firefighters found several cigarette butts near the area where the fire started, News On 6 was told.
