Keep the shades handy! Another sunny and warm day is on tap to round out the weekend.

High pressure will gradually slide off to our east today with a south wind returning by the afternoon hours. A few high clouds may stream through the state, but otherwise, we’re looking at yet another day with plenty of sunshine! Temperatures will be climbing a bit above normal once again with mid-80s for our Sunday afternoon highs.

Once again, the UV Index will be in the “very high” category today, meaning you could get a sunburn in as little as 15 minutes. Use the sunscreen early and often! Also, if you’re thinking about attempting a trip out on area lakes, please be very careful and wear your life jacket! Many of our eastern Oklahoma lakes remain well above normal, with many beaches and boat docks still flooded and areas of debris around thanks to April’s flooding rains.

The sunny and warm trend looks to stick around right into the beginning of the week as southerly breezes continue. Our mornings will be turning increasingly mild with lows holding in the upper 50s to lower 60s by Monday morning, with highs back in the mid-80s Monday afternoon.

Clouds will be gradually increasing on Tuesday as a ridge of high pressure aloft begins to break down, allowing our next storm system to move in by mid to late week. Scattered showers and storms will be possible beginning Wednesday, particularly west of Tulsa.

The best chance of storms still looks to come on Thursday, particularly Thursday evening and night, as an area of low pressure and a cold front move through. A few severe storms will be possible in this time frame. Rainfall amounts do not appear too excessive at this time, with average rain amounts around 1 inch possible from Wednesday through Thursday.

Some briefly cooler weather looks to follow that system by next Friday before we start to quickly warm back up again by next weekend with typical May temperatures returning. Right now, things are looking fairly quiet for Mother’s Day next Sunday, but we’ll continue to keep you updated as things become more clear!
