A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 26, 2016, for a McAlester man killed in Afghanistan. Mike Sauro, 40, was a civilian ammunition expert with the Army's Defense Ammunition Center. He was killed during an attack outside Kabul at an Afghan military ammunition supply point.
Mike deployed to Afghanistan in September as a civilian HAZMAT transportation manager and instructor with Defense Ammunition Center. The Department of Defense said Mike was killed by enemy gunfire during a training mission.
He had just celebrated his birthday the day before his death.
The memorial service is not open to the public. Funeral services are pending, according to a release from the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant.
