Tulsans Jump In To Assist Haitians In Matthew Aftermath

Tulsans are helping the people of Haiti after Hurricane Matthew hit the country this week.

About 900 people are thought to be dead on the island nation, with large sections flattened by the storm. 

A charity packing more than a quarter of a million meals to help feed storm victims. 

Kids Against Hunger Global is gearing up after Hurricane Matthew sent damaging winds and rain to Haiti.

"Right now, they're in desperate need for food," said Gary Majors, Board Member for Kids Against Hunger Global. 

Meals from the Tulsa-based charity are being put together.

The goal is to get 285,000 meals packed and sent by shipping container to Haiti.

From there, Majors said the meals go right to the church the charity works with.

"We've been supporting that church over there for a long long time and we know that the food gets to the people because when we give it to that pastor he takes care of it and he takes care of the people," Majors said. 

Majors said $100 makes around 400 meals and donations are needed when natural disasters like Hurricane Matthew hit countries like Haiti.    

Volunteers help pack the bags with nutrient-rich ingredients.

Kids Against Hunger Global also helps fight hunger in Tulsa. 

Majors said 25 percent of the food stays in the Tulsa area.
