Hunger is a problem in northeast Oklahoma, and the Community Food Bank's mission is to do something about that.

So, to help, they've joined with the American Institute of Architects to raise a little hunger awareness.

Challenge young architects to a contest; the theme is hunger, now design something out of cans of food. That’s the challenge executive director of Eastern Oklahoma’s American Institute of Architects, Lindsey Ellerbach, said three firms accepted.

"They each had several meetings in their offices," she said.

They had to decide what they were making, and how to make it out of cans.

Ellerbach said, “We went out to Reasor's and picked out varying colors of cans. Then, we got their order form back, and it's 16 of these, 31 of those."

This past Saturday was construction day - when they put their creations together.

Team Dewberry recreated the Very Hungry Caterpillar from the children’s book. The McIntosh Group designed an empty backpack out of cans, and SGA Design Group came up with a Hungry Hungry Hippo.from the kids game.

Monday was the judging - Betty Casey, Michael Birkes and Ryan Walker had to select a winner.

The results are secret until an open house in early September, but the teams had fun raising some money and food.

"When all is said and done it's food on someone's table," Ellerbach said.

The pieces will be on display at the Food Bank through the month of September, which is also Hunger Action Month.
