For just one day, the Saint Francis Children's Hospital nursing staff transformed a room into a wedding chapel.

With family and friends watching, and hundreds more tuned in on Facebook, 18-year-old Abbi and Swift Myers said I do.

"I was in shock and still am,” said Abbi. “We'll look at each other and say we're married now."

The young couple met almost three years ago at Saint Francis as another mutual friend battled leukemia.

Over time, their relationship blossomed.

"Everybody around us kind of knew we liked each other,” Abbi added. “But we were shy 16-year-olds."

Unlike so many other love stories, theirs has a unique string of setbacks.

Since 7th grade, Swift has battled cancer several times.

And he won each fight.

"As far as where we are now, he doesn't know how to give up," said Abbi.

The most recent bout came this past December when doctors found a tumor on his spine.

Radiation treatments have been tough. Abbie says he plans to beat it again, but this time, she'll be by his side.

"When he woke up, I asked what was the first thing he was gonna do and he said ‘I’m gonna marry you,’" Abbi recalled.

She says it took her a while to believe the proposal but knew it was real when he asked her dad for her hand in marriage.

We weren't able to talk to Swift because he needs additional rest, but Abbi, family and friends are staying by his side as he fights to beat cancer again.
