Tulsa Police are looking for a gunman who shot and killed a 17-year old near Virgin and Peoria, leaving a second teen in critical condition. Police say the victims were driving down Virgin in a maroon SUV after 10 p.m. Tuesday.
As they approached Madison Avenue, police say the driver honked his horn at another vehicle at the stop sign. The driver of the other vehicle then started shooting at the SUV - hitting two teenage passengers.
Police say a 17-year-old male in the passenger seat was shot in the chest. He has been identified as Daniel L. Carter.
The driver accelerated and drove around the shooter's vehicle before crashing into a no parking side on the north side of Virgin then coming to a stop on the south side of that street, according to Homicide Sergeant Dave Walker, Tulsa Police.
A witness, Darrell Knox, who is the owner of a local restaurant and lives nearby, says he stayed with the teen as he took his final breaths.
"We said, 'he's alive, alive,' hoping that emergency responders could get here sooner,"
Knox said Police said Carter died at the hospital.
Officers say the 16-year-old backseat passenger was taken to the hospital by a good Samaritan, and they say she's in critical condition. Walker said she was shot at least two times.
TPD says there was also a passenger in the shooter's car.
Detectives do not believe the shooting was random.
"Somewhere along the lines, these people have met up, and they know each other," said Detective Dave Walker, TPD Homicide. "There's some kind of beef going on that caused this to happen."
Knox said it's an experience he won't soon forget.
"It's saddening to see events like this happen," he said.
Police continue to investigate the shooting. If you know anything, call Crime Stoppers at 918-596-COPS.
