Homicide detectives have released the identity of two people arrested for killing a man during a string of carjackings, a news release says.
Emmitt Sam, 17, and Nathan Simmons, 16, are in the Tulsa County jail on first-degree murder complaints.
Police say the carjackings started in Broken Arrow late Friday and ended in Tulsa early Saturday. Johnathan Stephens, 27, was killed during that series of carjackings.
Tulsa Police Sgt. Dave Walker say it all began in Broken Arrow when the two stole a Lexus SUV at gunpoint near 64th and Garnett. From there, the pair drove to the 2700 block of South 90th East Avenue and stole a Ford Focus at gunpoint.
At some point after that, Stephens was killed.
Sgt. Dave Walker says the teens abandoned both vehicles near 21st and Interstate 44. From there, he says the two walked to a nearby apartment complex and carjacked a Nissan Sentra.
A short time later, Walker says the pair also carjacked a Dodge Charger at gunpoint. That is when a police officer spotted the Charger and a chase began.
The chase ended at a driveway in the 1600 block of South 124th East Avenue. Both were arrested and booked into the Tulsa County jail.
"We have not recovered any of the weapons used in the spree, and we believe that after the murder and the car robberies in Shoreline apartments, the suspects discarded the weapons," Walker said. "We do not know if they put them in an accomplice's apartment near 2300 S. Garnett or threw them out the window. A search of their path has not turned up the weapons."
Anyone with information on the guns or the murder is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 918-596-COPS.
Johnathan Stephens leaves behind a daughter, Serenity, who is 2-and-a-half years old. Amy Slanchik talked with his mother and will have more on News On 6 at 6 p.m.
