The owners of The Apple Tree say the store will close it for good on May 31, 2016.

In a post on the store's Facebook page on Monday, the owners say, "After careful consideration of the sustainability of a small business in an economy in distress and an industry that has seen numerous budget cuts over the years, this decision does not come easy. It has become increasingly difficult to remain competitive with the large corporations and the various online resources that are available to everyone."

The owners say they've been a part of the community for 36 years and are incredibly grateful to the generations of loyal customers they've dealt with during that time.

The store, located between Memorial and Sheridan on 41st Street, sells all kinds of learning materials, from puzzles to furniture.

Monday's Facebook message says the store will fulfill purchase orders and other customer needs until April 16.
