A special walk is underway honoring a Tulsa Police officer who lost his life while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps.

A group of supporters are trekking around Tulsa while wearing weighted backpacks to raise money for the Jared Shoemaker Academy of Rugby

They began their walk just after 6 a.m. Thursday at police headquarters in downtown Tulsa.

The walker's route covers nearly 100 miles of Tulsa and will stop at nine area high schools as well as Youth Services of Tulsa, all of which the Academy hopes to establish programs at to help at-risk and troubled youth.

On Friday morning at Tulsa's Veterans Park, district Judge Rebecca Nightingale will meet with the walkers and speak on behalf of the Academy.

The walk is scheduled to end Friday evening in downtown Tulsa at the Fassler Hall.
