Green Country firefighters were busy during the overnight hours this weekend, battling grass fires from Tulsa to Osage County.
One large fire broke out near an apartment complex and threatened several homes.
Firefighters battled the high winds trying to knock down the flames.
Tulsa firefighters had seconds to keep a large grass fire from spreading into a neighborhood near 65th West Avenue and Charles Page Boulevard.
It's not known how the fire started, but the dry conditions and high winds helped fuel the fire, firefighters said.
Brush trucks had to roll out to get right up to the fire line.
Firefighters raced to get their hoses out and the water pumping.
“It was dicey for a little bit and guys, these firefighters laid it on the line,” TFD Capt. Randy Spyres said. “They worked hard to put this thing out we really need people to be careful, watch what they're doing with fires.
“We had high, gusting winds. It was a challenge; we had six structures that were immediately threatened.”
While Tulsa firefighters wrapped up, Avant and Skiatook Fire Departments stopped a grass fire off of Javine Hill Road from spreading.
“Next thing I know, my daughter is outside and she's running back in saying, ‘Oh, my God. The field is on fire,’" Michelle Bearden said.
Bearden drove up to see her father-in-law's hay bales on fire.
Bearden and her family expect grass fires like to flare up this time of year.
“It's never gotten close to the house, thank goodness," she said. “It's a bad thing."
Oklahoma Forestry Services say more than 2,500 acres burned across the state since Friday and its urging everyone to limit burning and think twice before tossing cigarette butts.
