Rosie the Riveter was the symbol for women in the work place during World War II. Thousands of Rosies built the trucks and tanks and planes that helped win the war.

Rosie showed up at The Broadmoor Retirement community to share a history lesson.

It's 1940 and Glenn Miller and his Orchestra are entertaining the folks at the broadmoor Retirement Community. The little musical presentation of the 1940s and 50s is hosted by Dottie Piet, also known as Rosie the Riveter.

"What I do is kind of a history lesson," Dottie Piet said.

This is the third one of these she's put together. She's working through the 20th century two decades at a time.  In the '20s and '30s she was a flapper.. For the 40s, she's Rosie, the iconic woman in the workplace character of the World War II era. She scours the Internet looking for interesting facts and music.

She even found a song about Rosie.  What's funny she says, she never liked history in school.

"The history now blended with the music makes sense," Dottie said.

She's having a wonderful time putting these programs together and her fellow residents seem to love it too.

"I'm hearing conversations about what they remember from those years, bringing back a lot of memories," said Dottie Piet.

Dottie puts a costume together, and she encourages the folks who come to dress up as well. She's having a wonderful time and has decades to go: the war protest of the '60s and '70s, the Beatles. She says the music connects people with the activities of that period.

"It's gonna be hard when we get to the 2000s," she said  "The music today isn't what we remember."

Oh, I'll bet she'll come up with something.

Dottie's programs are the second Tuesday of each month at 2 p.m. at the Broadmoor Retirement Community.
