Jenks assistant football coach Bryant Calip has hit another milestone in his recovery from multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer.
Calip's doctors recently released him from home quarantine after undergoing a successful stem cell transplant.
Calip was admitted to an Oklahoma City hospital on February 2 and got a heavy dose of chemotherapy the next day. He had the stem cell procedure on February 5.
He spent five weeks confined to his home, and had to wear a surgical mask and gloves to minimize the risk of catching an infection while his white blood cells recover.
The coach says he's left home twice since being cleared—a date night with his wife last Saturday, and he took his daughter out for dinner on her birthday Wednesday night.
Calip says his doctors are pleased with the outcome of his treatments so far, and plan to put him on a maintenance chemotherapy program for the next year to prevent the cancer from coming back.
Calip is hoping to return to work as a teacher at Jenks East Elementary in a few weeks.
