UPDATE: Highway 97-T from Highway 412 to North Highway 97 (McKinley) open as of 10 a.m. Police say road conditions in town are still poor and urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel.

Deputy Chief of Police Mike Carter reports that 41st Street from 65th West Avenue to Highway 97 has been reopened as of about 6 a.m. Sunday. Road conditions are poor - but passable.

"We do encourage all unnecessary travel to be avoided as road conditions remain icy," Carter said.

Tow trucks and sand/plow crews are working to clear the road. Several cars got into a crash north bound; one was towed away.

The Sand Springs Police Department closed 97-T North of U.S. Highway 412 and also closed 41st Street between 65th West Avenue and Highway 97 due to weather-related conditions and the amount of vehicles off of the roadway in those areas.

One driver was running errands when he saw cars wrecked on Highway 97.

“It looked like a skating rink to me… I've lived up there for eight years, and I've never seen it that bad,” said Rick O'Dell.

Police urge the public not to travel on the icy roads.

“If you don't have to go out, stay home... Don't come out on the streets, unless you absolutely have to,” said Shannon Newman of the Sand Springs Police.
