The pedestrian bridge on Riverside is being torn down earlier than planned, due to crumbling concrete falling on cars. Riverside drive between 21st and 31st has been closed all day while workers take down the 80 year old piece of Tulsa history.
The bridge is being torn down to make way for the Gathering Place, and demolition crews aren't letting snow and frigid temperatures stop them.
For some, it's a bittersweet sight to see. "You know it's sad that it's going down because it's old and it's history, but we have to move forward and have new great things for the city," said local resident Matt Hogan.
The demolition crew isn't the only group braving the snow. Some people are making stops to see the process. “I mean, it just sounded kind of fun to come watch," stated one onlooker.
The crews say they don't mind the weather, in fact Tulsa City Engineer Paul Zachary says the snow has made things easier. "Actually with the snow, it's cut down on the traffic and a lot of the runners,” explained Zachary. “When we were putting up the net two weekends ago, it was cold but there were a lot of runners going up and down through here, and somehow, the snow helps keep the dust down too."
Riverside Drive will reopen to traffic at 5:30 p.m.
