Sequoyah State Park's renovated Sequoyah Lodge has been dedicated by the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department.

The 104-room lodge -- originally built in 1956 -- has been renovated to emphasize the original mid-century modern design. Emphasis has been placed on interior upgrades which focus on environmental awareness including fabrics with reduced environmental impact and furnishings made in the U.S.

Cost of the renovation was $8.4 million over five years. Improvements include interior renovation and furnishings, exterior and roof repair, replacement of the heating, air conditioning and mechanical and electrical components as well as kitchen equipment.

"We're very proud of every room and the suites, that was a condition that we got the most complaints on, like I said, we stripped 'em clear down to the bare floor and put everything back new," said Tony Presley, Park Manager.

The 9-hole golf course was built in 1957 and expanded in 1959.

The lodge is named in honor of Sequoyah, one of the most prominent members of the Cherokee tribe who developed the Cherokee alphabet.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
