Glenpool Offers Amnesty For Unpaid Tickets, Fines

More than a million dollars in unpaid tickets and fines is standing between a Green Country police department and the new patrol cars and radio system it desperately needs.

Chief Dennis Waller with the Glenpool Police Department said it's a good chunk of change, but hopes showing a little grace will help the department cash in.

"I didn't realize we had as much as what we had until we got into it. It was kind of a shock to me too," Waller said.

It's as close to a get out of jail free card that someone could hope for. Glenpool police will get rid of warrants, and the $100 warrant fee, to people who pay their fees and fines by February 27th.

Waller said hundreds of people are wanted in Glenpool for not paying tickets, citations, court fees and other fines; it adds up to $1.3 million missing.

"They may make a payment or two, then leave. You may never see them again," Waller said.

That's why the department is offering amnesty. They're willing to toss a warrant and fee in exchange for full payment of all fees and fines.

Waller said the 3,000 warrants haven't already been served because he doesn't have enough officers to serve them.

"It's manpower. Like I say, it's over time and you're already dealing with a budget, that's the reason we're looking at this. We're trying to save money," he said.

One of Glenpool's biggest offenders has racked up more than $8,000 in outstanding fines - $4,524 for alcohol-related charges, like DUI and public intoxication, $1,658 for possession of drugs, $930 for destruction of property and $599 for speeding.

Most of the warrants are for unpaid traffic tickets. It's estimated 48,000 people drive through Glenpool each day, many of them on Highway 75.

Fees and fines can be paid at the court clerk's office.

The warrant amnesty offer ends February 27th.

"This is people's opportunity to come in and take care of it on your own and save a little bit of money," Waller said.

If you can't afford the fees or fines, you can set up a payment plan with a judge.

Waller said Glenpool police will be more aggressive serving warrants after the offer ends.
