With flu season in full swing in Oklahoma and across the country, a local EMS service is offering a unique way to get your flu shot.
The Tulsa Health department is just one of the many places in the area that you can get a flu shot, but what if you can't get to the doctor or your local health department?
One county EMS service thought about that 17 years ago and decided to start offering flu shot delivery.
"They do tell us, ‘If it weren't for you all I wouldn't have got a flu shot this year,'" said Rebecca Williamson with Muskogee County EMS.
Muskogee County EMS offers to bring the vaccine to your door. It's a unique service they've been offering for years, but many are still unfamiliar with it.
"Most people are really surprised, and to us it's just something that we do. We're always very community oriented and we do a lot of programs in our community, and we forget that not everyone does that, and so people are really pleased and they're happy that we're able to do this," Williamson said.
Muskogee County EMS said whether you just can't make it to the doctor or are home-bound, they'll deliver.
Williamson said, "We try really hard to work with the people and schedule the appointment when they need it."
Flu shots are available to anyone in Muskogee County or their service area. They said it's as simple as giving them a call and making an appointment.
They hope other EMS services decide to start their own programs as well.
We're certainly willing to share the information we have about our program. We'd love for other EMS services to do this as well," said Williamson.
If you have Medicare part B, Muskogee County EMS will bill your insurance; otherwise the shot is just $25 for everyone else.
