Video Shows Thieves Pepper Spray Sand Springs Walmart Employees

Surveillance video of an attempted robbery shows one of the thieves pepper spray three Sand Springs Walmart employees.

Police said two women tried to walk out with hundreds of dollars' worth of toys, but when employees stepped in, police said one of the thieves let loose with the spray.

There are dozens of security cameras inside and outside the Sand Springs Walmart; footage from those cameras show the suspects look rather young, probably in their late teens.

The hope is someone will see the footage and help police solve the case.

The toy department at the Walmart seemed fairly busy considering it was 1:30 on a Monday morning.

Surveillance video shows a few shoppers browsing the aisles, but police said two women were up to no good.

What they were doing, police said, was filling their cart full of Disney Frozen toys.

Then, they made their way to the self-checkout, but police said the women skipped paying for the $700 worth of toys and tried to walk out with them instead.

“Obviously if you're trying something like that, it's a little more of an advanced technique than to just try to conceal something like a normal shoplifter,” said Deputy Chief Mike Carter with the Sand Springs Police.

Store employees were watching the women and moved in to stop them. Both started to head for the exit, then, one decided to go back for the cart.

Video shows a bit of a tussle, which is when Carter said the woman pulled out pepper spray and attacked three store employees.

“It is pretty brazen, and then when the capper's up to try to take action against store employees by spraying them, I thought that was pretty brazen as well,” said Carter.

The women didn't make it out with any toys, but they did get away. Security cameras show them leaving in a purple or navy PT Cruiser.

They're described as African-American and about five feet tall. Employees told police one had a short haircut with a heart shape shaved into it.

Carter said someone knows the women and he's hoping those who do will do the right thing.

“Most people are honest, and most people understand that that is not something they want our society to permit, and they call us and that's how we solve crimes,” he said.

The store employees were treated at the store and they even finished out their shift.
