An offense that averages 64 points and a quarterback that has thrown for over 3,600 yards sounds unreal.
Quarterback Mason Fine said, "I look at it as a team achievement."
From talking to Fine you wouldn't know that he has set Oklahoma's single-season record for most touchdown passes on the season. The Locust Grove Pirates went undefeated this season, and are set to take on Spiro Friday as they enter the first game of playoffs. “I like this offense, especially spreading the wealth. When that happens the whole team is just having fun,” said Fine.
Fine's good friend, and teammate, Jason Pirtle, has a state leading 23 touchdown catches. After trying to recruit each other to their respective schools, they decided to stay at Locust Grove.
They are the most prolific combination in the state, and they have excelled in their junior years. Fine has thrown 55 touchdowns, and only 3 interceptions.
The dynamic duo first met in fifth grade. "I've known him forever. He tried to get me to go over there. We worked together during the summer, and worked together in the off season. [We] just try to keep up the chemistry,” said Pirtle. Fine stated, “We just clicked pretty well. We had the same goals, and we were going to achieve those goals.”
Head coach Matt Hennesy is happy that the hard work lead to big stats and massive wins. "Pirtle would be good no matter who's throwing to him, [and] Mason would be good no matter who he's throwing to… On any given day I could be out doing something, and those two will still be out throwing the ball," says Hennesy.
On Friday night Fine could be the first quarterback in Oklahoma High School history to throw for over four thousand yards in a single season.
