AP: Senator Jim Inhofe Easily Wins Re-Election

The Associated Press has called the election for U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe. The Republican defeated Democratic challenger Matt Silverstein.

U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe is heading back to the Senate for a fourth term. Inhofe was easily re-elected to office in a general election Tuesday, November 4. 

A Tulsa resident, the 79-year-old Inhofe is the senior senator from Oklahoma. The Republican defeated Democratic challenger Matt Silverstein.

He made his acceptance speech at the Republican Watch Party in Oklahoma City. He said they are celebrating that Republicans now have control of the House and Senate in Washington.

Inhofe is an outspoken proponent of a strong defense, pro-business legislation and limiting environmental sanctions on U.S. business, particularly the energy industry.

He told the crowd at the watch party that they will change President Obama's policies of disarming the military and crippling the business community.

Inhofe was most recently in the national news for pushing to ban incoming travel from West Africa due to the Ebola epidemic. He has called for a temporary travel ban from the three West African nations fighting the Ebola outbreak.

Current legislation includes a resolution to authorize the use of force against the organization called the Islamic State, a bill to reverse the lesser prairie chicken as a threatened species and the American burying beetle from the list of endangered species, and a bill to amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to extend the detention of certain aliens ordered removed.

Inhofe was first elected to the Senate in 1994. Inhofe also served eight years as the U.S. Representative for Oklahoma's 1st congressional district. He was a former state representative and senator as well as the mayor of Tulsa.Senator Inhofe is a U.S. Army veteran and an avid pilot. He has been married to wife Kay for 54 years.

Inhofe's son, Dr. Perry Inhofe, died in a plane crash in Owasso almost one year ago.
