Pawnee 12 Year Old Publishes Book, Working On Another

A group of kids called The Believers must climb Mount Everest and battle monsters and their evil leader to save the world. That's the theme of a new book by a young author from Pawnee.

Meagan Pickering has launched her career as a writer, and she's not yet a teenager.

"A girl whose light complexion and green eyes made her brown hair look like liquid chocolate flowing over her shoulders," she ready.

Meagan was reading from her book The Believers, which was published last spring.

Since then she's been doing readings, book signings and even a personal appearance at a Houston-area elementary school to talk about writing.

"I finished it in about three months," the 12 year old said.

It's the story of a group of kids summoned by a magical yak to defend the earth against the monsters who want to control it.

Meagan said she'd always written short stories, but one day told her mom she thought she could write a book - a little encouragement is all it took.

"Sometimes I could write for hours and not run out of ideas, but sometimes it was really hard to come up with ideas," she said.

When writer's block hits she said it's a good idea to have something else you're working on you can switch to.

The most fun was the invite to a Houston-area elementary school where her aunt works, to talk to three classes of fourth graders about writing.

The kids read the book then she came to visit. She answered questions, and signed copies of the book, and she's working on book two.

"I have 10 chapters," she said.

She's been bitten by the fame and fortune bug, but Meagan's got plan B.

"I want to do this for a living when I grow up, but I'm planning on when I go to college to get an engineering degree in case the writing doesn't work out," she said.
