UPDATE: Bartlesville Pre-K Student Diagnosed With Viral Meningitis

Bartlesville Public Schools says it was notified Sunday that a Pre-K student has been diagnosed with meningitis. 

BPS Community Relations coordinator Chris Tanea says the student is hospitalized in Tulsa. Tanea said the student's mother reported the child is doing okay. 

Tanea said doctors have confirmed Monday that the student has the viral form of meningitis, according to a parent of the student.

"The doctors said that the cultures are clear of bacteria," a news release states.

Tanea said the student first began feeling ill Friday evening. After seeking medical attention, the student was admitted to a Tulsa hospital Sunday.

Tanea says the school district has been in contact with the Washington County Health Department as well as the Oklahoma State Department of Health. He said safety is the number one priority, and even though it is not a recommendation of the Oklahoma State Department of Health, the Wayside Elementary's custodial staff disinfected the areas which the student may have come in contact with, including the Pre-K pod and cafeteria.

Tanea said the last time the student was in school was Friday, October 10, 2014, a week before he reportedly became ill.

Bartlesville Public Schools has notified all Wayside Elementary School parents and said the school be open as usual Monday, October 20, 2014.
