The next Vision 2025 Route 66 enhancement project began last week in Tulsa. Construction of gateways on the east and west sides of downtown is now underway.
Crews are currently working on the first that will be installed on the north side of East 11th Street, east of I-44, a news release says. Construction is expected to take one week.
Construction on the west gate will immediately follow on Southwest Boulevard near the entrance of the Crystal City shopping center.
According to the release, the gateways will be nearly 39 feet high and more than 48 feet wide, with an LED Route 66 shield. It will be lit at night.
“The design of the gateways combines elements of architectural significance from the art deco era, creating a notable iconic feature for heritage tourism in Tulsa,” said Dennis Whitaker with the City of Tulsa.
The total cost for the project is $930,000. The funding comes from the Vision 2025 Tulsa County sales tax.
