The Owasso Police Department is investigating after a large commercial-type fireworks mortar shell exploded inside a home Saturday morning.

Firefighters got a call to the home 11500 block of North 131st East Avenue about 10:30 a.m.

Police said a man and woman in the home were injured and taken to the hospital.

Initially, police said one of the victims was putting gunpowder into a large commercial fireworks mortar shell when the explosion occurred. Since then, police say a search of the home has turned evidence of secondary explosive devices.

"There is evidence consistent with the manufacture of cylindrical metal explosive devices within the home," Lt. Nick Boatman said.

Neighbors said they heard several loud booms then looked outside to see the man screaming, bloody and flailing in his front yard.

Police said he was holding a 13-inch border shell when it exploded in his hands.

Police confirmed the man suffered significant injuries to both hands and a woman sustained unknown injures in the explosion.

Two police officers who responded to the home were also taken to the hospital after they were overwhelmed by the smell of the gunpowder after entering the home.

Both officers are in good condition. There is no word the condition of the man and woman.

Six nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution according to police.

Police said the ATF and the Tulsa bomb squad have been called to help with the investigation.
