A former basketball player at Bacone College in Muskogee caused a lockdown at Detroit Metropolitan Airport after he exited and then went back through a secure checkpoint Thursday.

Christian Smith's mother says he mistakenly re-entered a secure area after missing a flight Thursday on the way to a basketball tryout.

Jennifer Smith of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, said Christian Smith's actions "were a complete misunderstanding."

The lockdown delayed 33 flights at the airport and lasted over two hours. Smith was arrested and booked into jail after he left a secured area and re-entered it without being re-screened, airport officials said.

After posting bond Friday, Smith's mom said Christian continued on to Los Angeles to try out with an overseas professional basketball team.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
