Ten Broken Arrow Stores Sell Alcohol To Minors During Police Check

Broken Arrow Police say clerks at 10 out of 33 businesses failed to check ID, resulting in alcohol sales to minors during a routine compliance check May 16.

"That's a 30 percent failure rate, so that's a pretty high percentage," said Corporal Leon Calhoun, BAPD public information officer.

Calhoun said clerks who are cited can not only lose their job but also can be fined up to $500, have to appear in court and pay court costs.

"We want the word to get out that if you sell alcohol to minors, you can get into serious trouble," he said Monday morning.

The department runs the compliance checks every two or three months as grant money becomes available from the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services in conjunction with the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office.

In March, 2013, only three out of 35 businesses failed to ask for ID.

This time of year is especially important to ensure compliance as high school seniors will be celebrating graduation, according to Calhoun.

"Unfortunately, in this case, they did actually have a lot of violators," he said. "We're trying to prevent minors from having possession of alcohol and making poor decisions as a result."

The stores where clerks failed to check IDs were:

• Harrod's
• D & J Liquors
• Rooster Mart
• Tiger Express
• Stop-N-Go
• Warehouse Market
• QuikTrip at 2400 East Kenosha
• Shell at 2401 North 23rd
• Kum N Go at 9th and Albany
