A former employee of St. John Medical Center in Tulsa has been charged with embezzling more than $200,000 over 20 years.
According to court documents, 56-year-old Mary Elizabeth Vaughan of Catoosa embezzled $219,451 from January 1, 1994 to January 25, 2013.
A spokesperson for the hospital released the following statement about the case:
"St. John Medical Center confirms Mary Beth Vaughan has not been employed since January of 2013. It is our policy to not comment on personnel issues; however, there was no impact to patient accounts or patient information."
A former co-worker told News On 6 Vaughan was the director of the Medical Staff Office at the hospital. The co-worker said that office coordinates and credentials the 300-400 doctors who work at the hospital.
Each doctor pays yearly dues to the hospital for the privilege of working there, usually about $250, and that money goes through the Medical Staff Office, according to the former co-worker. The co-worker said the office also collects money for a yearly medical staff party.
Vaughan faces one felony count of embezzlement.
She surrendered at the Tulsa County Jail Thursday morning and was released on a $20,000 bond. Her next court appearance is set for May 1, 2014.
