A Claremore man has died after wrecking a muscle car on Sunday afternoon.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says David Nickerson, 62, was driving a 1968 American Motors Rambler American at a high rate of speed when the car went out of control and hit a utility pole.

It happened at 2:07 p.m. on Sunday, April 20, 2014 on North-South 4190 Road just northeast of Claremore Lake, according to the trooper who investigated the crash.

The OHP says a helicopter ambulance took Nickerson to St. John Medical Center in Tulsa in critical condition. He died at about 1 a.m. on Monday morning, according to the OHP.

The trooper's report says the car had no seat belts.
