Dewey Firefighters Battle Grass Fire For Second Day

Dewey firefighters are on day two of working a fire north of the Bartlesville airport in Washington County. Dewey Fire Chief Dale Little says his crews battled the fire from 5:30 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday when it appeared to be out.

The fire flared back up, and crews returned to the wooded area at 10 a.m. Friday.

It's burned about 1,500 acres so far, Little said. Seven houses are threatened, but the chief is confident they will prevent the fire from coming over the hill to the homes. There are several roads that should serve as breaks, according to Osage SkyNews 6 pilot Will Kavanagh.

Kavanagh spoke to firefighters on the ground to give them information about the fire's progress.

Volunteers from Copan, Washington County and Osage Hills are assisting the Dewey firefighters.

"We've got quite a bit of help," Little said. "This is the type of fire where we're having to get out in the woods with backpacks."

Many of his firefighters have been up for 36 hours and are very tired, but there have been no injuries, Little said.
