Jose Trevino hit two home runs on Tuesday as the Oral Roberts University baseball team spoiled the Kansas' home opener with a 8-7 victory in midweek action Hoglund Ballpark in Lawrence, Kan.
ORU improved to 7-8 on the season with its first victory over a Big 12 program since beating Baylor in the 2012 Waco Regional, and the Jayhawks fell to 12-4. The Golden Eagles are now 22-19 all-time against the Jayhawks.
Trevino finished the afternoon 3-4 with two home runs, a single, three runs scored and three runs batted in. Tyler Boss and Anthony Sequeira had a double,a single and an RBI. Logan Domenico, Joey Migliaccio and Brandon Healy added RBI's in the contest.
Matt Brandy picked up a single in the third inning to extend his Southland Conference leading hitting streak to 16 games.
Jordan Romano (1-0) earned the victory, allowing just a hit and striking out three in 2.2 innings of work.
Michael Suiter led the Jayhawks with two hits, two runs and two RBI's, while Jacob Boyland reached with two hits and a drove in a runner. Dakota Smith (1-1) took the loss in two-thirds of an inning of work.
Connor McKay started the scoring for the Jayhawks in the bottom of the first with a single through the right side to score Suiter and to give the Jayhawks a 1-0 lead.
In ORU's half of the second inning, the Golden Eagles tied the game at one. Following a Boss double down the right field line, Migliaccio stepped in an singled to score to plate Boss.
However, the Jayhawks answered in the bottom of the second. Tucker Tharpe drew a leadoff walk and scored two batters later on a first pitch single by Ka'iana Edredge, who quickly scored from first on a double off the bat of Jacob Boylan to put the Jayhawks on top, 3-1.
After a Justin Protacio single, Boylan crossed the plate as Tommy Mirabelli flew out to deep center, extending the lead to 4-1.
The Golden Eagles regained the lead in the top of the third with four runs on six hits. With no outs and runners on the corners, Healy laid down a sacrifice bunt to push Sequeira across to cut the lead to 4-2. Two batters later, Trevino single to center to scored Forcier and make the Jayhawk lead 4-3.
ORU quickly knotted the game at four runs apiece as Domenico singled to right field to drive in Brandy, and Boss followed with the Golden Eagles sixth single of the inning to drive in Trevino and to give ORU a 5-4 lead.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Trevino hit his first home run of the season with a blast over the right center field wall, snapping a 25-game homerless streak.
In the bottom of the seventh, Suiter struck again with a two-run triple in the alley in left to tie the game at six. Suiter scored on the next pitch as McKay bounced out to short, giving the Jayhawks a 7-6 lead.
Trevino answered the three Jayhawk runs in the top of the eighth, sending another shot over the right center field wall to tie the game at seven. ORU retook a 8-7 lead with two-outs as Sequeira doubled into the left field corner to bring across Domenico.
Romano struck out two in the bottom of the ninth to clinch the victory.
ORU returns home on Friday as they host Northwestern State at 6:30 p.m. in their Southland Conference opener. Game two against the Demons will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday and game three is set 1 p.m. on Sunday.
