Tulsa Young Professionals Push 'Millennial' Agenda At State Capitol

A group from Tulsa's Young Professionals organization is meeting with state legislators to push issues they consider important for a younger demographic.

Those "Millennial" issues include increased investment in education and the arts, a rail service between Tulsa and OKC and modernization of the state's beer and wine laws.

About 50 TYPros members are spending the day at the Capitol with leaders. So far on Tuesday, the group has heard from Representative T.W. Shannon and Lt. Gov. Todd Lamb, among others.

TYPros say they want to see an end to recent education funding cuts that they feel negatively impact the state's capacity to attract young professionals and the companies that employee them.

Members of the group also oppose cutting funding for arts and culture, believing that to be a key component in attracting and retaining the Millennial workers who are becoming increasingly valued as Baby Boomers retire, according to TYPros Executive Director Shagah Zakerion.

"We consider this a conversation about Oklahoma's future," Zakerion said in a news release.

"We believe that legislators deserve to hear directly from young professionals about what it will take to bring young people here and, in turn, ensure that Oklahoma prospers for years to come."
