Cierra Hughes went 4-for-6 with four RBI and three runs scored on the day to lead the Tulsa softball team to wins over McNeese State, 5-4 (8 inn.), and Oregon State, 9-1 (6 inn.), to begin the Aggie Classic Friday at the Aggie Softball Complex.
With the two wins, the Golden Hurricane improved to 6-1 on the season. Senior Aimee Creger (2-0) struck out 14 batters and allowed just two hits in the 9-1 win over Oregon State. Junior Bailey Erwin went the distance in the eight-inning win over McNeese State to improve her record to 3-0.
Tulsa opened the day with a come-from-behind extra-inning win over McNeese State (3-3). TU trailed 3-0 after three innings, and tied the game with two runs in the fourth and one in the sixth inning. The Hurricane outscored McNeese State 2-1 in the eighth with International Tiebreaker rule in effect to win, 5-4.
The Golden Hurricane jumped on Oregon State (3-5) early, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first in response to a single run scored by the Beavers in the top of the inning. TU added a run in the fourth inning, and sophomore Jocelyn Sheffield hit a three-run home run in the sixth to end the game by run rule, 9-1.
The Golden Hurricane will face the same two teams on Saturday, playing Oregon State at 10 a.m., and McNeese State at 12:15 p.m. TU concludes the tournament against No. 8 Texas A&M at 12:15 p.m. Sunday.
