The new year is off to an encouraging start for a teenage girl critically injured in a collision with a school bus.

Two injured teenagers were able to go home about two weeks after the wreck, but Brittany is still getting treatment for her injuries.

Two weeks before Thanksgiving, when a car 15-year-old Brittany Stokes was riding in pulled in front of an Adair school bus, she ended up in intensive care for five weeks.

"We're lucky to have her," said her guardian, Linda Biscorner.

She survived, but the young barrel racer had a collapsed lung and a broken arm, broken ribs, vertebrae and pelvis, among other injuries. After five surgeries, Brittany is now at a children's hospital in Bethany, Oklahoma. She's undergoing intense physical therapy.

"I hear it every time I go to see her--it's, 'I'm ready to come home,'" Biscorner said.

She said the teenager won't be able to use her legs for a couple of months and can't use her right arm because of a fractured elbow, but she is improving each day.

"It is progress and we're very proud of her, for what she's been able to do. She's overcome a lot," Biscorner said.

Brittany arrived at the children's hospital just before Christmas.

"She got to see Santa Claus and they were really nice about bringing her presents, and we took our presents there," Biscorner said.

She also spent New Year's Day in the hospital.

Some friends have had the chance to visit her.

"I think when we get her home and her friends will be able to come to the house and visit with her, that will help her spirits a lot," her guardian said.

Biscorner says, with more hard work and even more progress, Brittany may get to come home in a few more weeks. She's hopeful 2014 will be a good year for Brittany.

Doctors hope, with more physical therapy and hard work, Brittany will be able to walk again.
