Four Tulsa women's basketball players scored in double figures to lead the Golden Hurricane to a 68-67 lead over Lamar on Sunday afternoon at the Montagne Center in Beaumont, Texas. TU moved to 1-1 on the season, while the Cardinals moved to 2-2 overall.
Kadan Brady led the Golden Hurricane with 13 points, including three treys, while Mariah Turner and Ashley Clark both contributed 12 points, and Liesl Spoerl added 11 points. Turner and Loren McDaniel led Tulsa with seven rebounds, while Clark had six assists, and Clark and Grovey each had three steals.
JaMeisha Edwards hit a three-pointer to start the game, but Brady countered for Tulsa to tie the score, 3-3, with 18:37 on the clock. TU climbed to a seven-point lead twice, including a 17-10 advantage with 8:14 left to play in the half, but the Cardinals went on a 21-0 run spanning 5:25 off the clock to take a 31-17 lead. The Golden Hurricane closed out the half with a 9-3 run to trail 34-26 at the break.
In the second half, Tulsa inched back and took the lead 40-39 with 15:31 on the clock, but Lamar scored the next 11 points to lead by 10 with 12:11 remaining. The Cardinals had a 10-point advantage again with 9:19 on the clock, but TU chipped away at the deficit to tie the game at 64-all with 1:15 left to play. Gia Ayers hit a three-pointer, but Turner scored a layup and Brady hit two big free throws to take the lead and earn the win.
Lamar was led by Edwards with 14 points, while Kiandra Bowers had 11, and both Kensha'dra Smith and Shauna Long tallied 10 points. Alice Robinson pulled down nine rebounds, while Ayers added six assists and three steals.
Tulsa will return to action on Friday, Nov. 22 against Western Michigan. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
