A Tulsa family escaped their burning home in the 6300 block of South 69th Place late Sunday.

Firefighters got the call at about 11 p.m. about a car in the garage on fire, but when they arrived, they found flames coming from the roof of the home.

The homeowner told firefighters a smoke detector awoke a child and everyone including the family's pet got out unharmed.

Firefighters sprayed water on homes nearby to keep embers from the house's wooden shingles from catching them on fire. Firefighters said the burning shingles posed "an extreme fire hazard to the structures around" the home.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Firefighters say the house is a total loss.

The Red Cross is helping the family.
