A man was shot and killed outside a Tulsa hotel room by an off-duty Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper early Sunday. Authorities say the officer-involved shooting took place just after 1 a.m. at the Best Budget Inn, Admiral and Sheridan.

Captain George Brown of the OHP said the off-duty trooper saw two men with guns at the hotel.

"The trooper exits his vehicle, identifies himself as a trooper, feels threatened at some point, fires on the suspect, hitting and killing one suspect," Brown said.

It appeared the shooting victim died on an outdoor stairwell, on the second floor of the three-story hotel. The second man got away.

Brown said they were searching for the second suspect but did not have a description. OHP will be in charge of the investigation, but Brown said he had few other details to release as yet.

"All we do know is he did witness a person with a firearm. Someone has a firearm, you identify yourself as a police officer or state trooper and from that point it becomes essentially an on-duty type incident," he said.

"We'll know more once we get into the investigation."

Brown believed a weapon was recovered at the scene but did not have the make or model. The man who was killed appeared to be white or Hispanic and heavily tattooed.

Police took some witnesses in for questioning that they believe were with the man who was shot and killed, the captain said.
