Editor's Note: The church was misidentified in an earlier version of this story as the First Presbyterian Church. It is the Christ Presbyterian Church that was destroyed by fire.

Crews were on scene late Saturday night as a Presbyterian Church was destroyed by flames. The church is located at 102 East 4th Street and is connected to the old Claremore Public Schools Administration building.

Crews arrived just after 10 p.m.

Firefighters worked to extinguish the fire at the two-story rock building as a storm blew into town. Crews brought in a ladder truck and were spraying homes and a gymnasium nearby to keep the fire contained.

A strong wind whipped flames and heavy smoke that could be seen from the Will Rogers Turnpike.

The fire appeared to start on the south side, according to a witness at the scene.

Emergency medical personnel were on hand to help firefighters due to the extreme heat.
