A Chris Williams home run jump-started a seven-run eighth inning that carried the Oral Roberts University baseball team to a 12-6 victory over Lamar at Vincent-Beck Field on Saturday afternoon.
Paired with ORU's 8-1 win on Friday night, the comeback victory clinches a series victory for Ryan Folmar's team. ORU has won four straight Southland Conference series.
The 12-run output is the highest of the season for the Golden Eagles. ORU improved its record to 12-8 in Southland Conference play and 17-26 overall, while the Cardinals fell to the same conference mark and 33-14 overall.
Williams came to the plate with the Golden Eagles down 6-5 with one out in the top of the eighth and blasted his fifth home run of the season to tie the game. Later in the inning, a two-run triple from Kevin Cho gave ORU a lead they would not relinquish.
With the lead in hand, the Golden Eagles would put the game away with RBI hits by Tyler Boss and Jose Trevino and a Nate Goro sacrifice fly.
Cho led the Golden Eagles with four hits and three RBI's in the game, wile Williams also had three RBI's.
Alec Smith (1-3) came out of the pen to earn the victory, allowing just one hit and no runs in 2.2 innings. Drew Bowen got the start and went three innings, surrendering six runs.
Matt Brandy, Trevino, Goro, Healy and Colt each finished with a pair of hits and Colt added a multi-RBI contest with two RBI.
Cho, Goro and Healy each recorded triples in the game, the first time a Golden Eagle team has recorded three triples in one contest since April 3, 2004, against Chicago State.
After going down 3-0 after the first inning, the Golden Eagles answered with three of their own in the top of the second. After Williams' sacrifice fly, run-scoring hits by Colt and Cho tied the game.
The Cardinals regained the lead in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by Sam Bumpers' second double, scoring a run.
Darian Johnson, Brad Picha and Bumpers each finished with three hits, with Picha hitting Lamar's lone home run of the game.
Ben Coram took the loss for Lamar.
The Golden Eagles go for the sweep on the Cardinals on Sunday at 1 p.m.
