Thursday Morning Update

A freeze warning remains for the next few hours across a large chunk of northeastern and eastern OK as temps are falling into the upper 20s across western OK and the  lower 30s across the NE part of the state.  The massive winter-like storm system that hit the state yesterday is now moving eastward and we'll see improving weather conditions for the next few days.  Daytime temperatures will remain below the normal seasonal averages until Sunday, and then move to near 80 early next week.  Another stout cold front may arrive Wednesday bringing more storms and colder air to the area late next week.  

The system that brought cold rain and thunderstorms to eastern OK yesterday brought damaging tornadoes to some of our neighbors in Arkansas.  The severe weather threat today extends into the deep south and northward into the Ohio River Valley.   

Our weather will feature northwest to west winds today around 10 to 18 mph, but the clouds will begin clearing soon and abundant sunshine will be anticipated for many locations.  The afternoon temps may go into the mid and upper -50s but RAW NAM data suggest highs around 50 to 54.  I'll stick with a high near 54.   

Tomorrow morning another freeze is expected but the afternoon temps will move even warmer into the upper 60s along with a pleasant north breeze around 10 mph.   

The upper level pattern should bring a fast but weak disturbance into the state late Friday night, more so Saturday morning to midday, and this may produce some light rain in a few locations.  We will continue to keep a chance in our forecast.  Daytime highs Saturday will move into the upper 60s with even warmer air Sunday into early next week.  

Next week a surface boundary will be near or slightly north of the state through Tuesday.  Another somewhat strong upper level system will move near the southern plains causing a return of southerly winds and increasing moisture moving northward.  The pattern would suggest a chance of storms sometime Tuesday into Wednesday, and the GFS-EURO also hints at another cold frontal passage around Wednesday with colder air Thursday.   

The high in Tulsa yesterday was 44  recorded at 2:56 AM. 

The normal daily average high is 71  and the low is 48.

Daily records include a high of 93 from 1972 and a low of  30 from 1940.
