The Tulsa women's basketball team fell 59-45 to UAB on Sunday afternoon. TU dropped to 12-16 on the season and 7-8 in Conference USA, while the Blazers moved to 17-11 overall and 8-7 in the league.
Ashley Clark and Kelsee Grovey each scored nine points, while Taleya Mayberry added eight and Mariah Turner tallied six to lead the Hurricane attack. Tiffani Couisnard pulled down seven rebounds, had three assists and two blocks, Clark added six boards, and Mayberry and Clark each had two steals.
The Hurricane shot 34 percent from the field, 39 percent from behind the arc and 58 percent from the free throw line. Tulsa scored 18 points in the paint, 16 points off turnovers and had 12 points off the bench.
Tulsa jumped out to a 7-2 lead with 15:17 on the clock, but UAB countered with a 10-0 run to take a 12-7 advantage with 12:39 left to play. TU outscored the Blazers 10-5 for a 17-17 score with 7:02 on the clock, but UAB closed out the half with a 17-6 run to take a 34-23 advantage into the break.
The Hurricane came out with a 7-0 run to start the second half, but UAB answered with a 7-0 scoring run of their own. Both teams traded baskets, but TU couldn't overcome the first-half deficit.
UAB was led by Karisma Chapman with 21 points, Kelsie Weynand with 15, all of which were scored from behind the arc, and Michaelea Kleist with 10 points. Chapman and Brittany Winborne each had eight rebounds, while Kleist and Khalilah Watson both added seven boards.
UAB was 39 percent from the field, 35 percent from three-point range and 83 percent from the charity stripe.
Tulsa will conclude the regular season on Thursday, March 7th against Houston. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. TU will honor its seniors, Tiffani Couisnard, Taleya Mayberry and Jessica McQuin, after the game.
