Police are investigating the death of a 5-month-old boy at a West Tulsa apartment complex Thursday morning.

Tulsa Police and EMSA got the call at 6:30 a.m. from the Sandy Park Apartments at 6300 West 11th Place.

The police don't know what happened and have no indication it's something other than an accident, but they are waiting on a report from the medical examiner for answers.

The police were called to the apartment building after EMSA arrived and found a 5-month-old boy dead.

Police say the mother called 911 to report she found the child on the floor beside his crib and he was not breathing.

Detectives from the child crisis unit of TPD responded to interview everyone they could.

The police say both parents, the grandmother and two other children, ages 3 and 5, all live in the apartment and were home at the time.

The apartment complex is part of the Tulsa Housing Authority.

"We're going to have to rely on the M.E. to tell us the manner and cause of death of this child," said Officer Leland Ashley. "There has been no arrest. The parents and everyone has been cooperative with detectives and we're just going to have to rely on the M.E."

Officers say the child appeared to have some minor bruises, but nothing that would indicate something other than what the parents say happened.

While this appears to be a tragic accident, the police are involved, because exactly what happened is unknown.

Caseworkers from the Department of Human Services looked over the situation and decided it was safe for the two other children to remain in the home with the parents.

There is no timeline on the medical examiner's report, but police say that's what they need next in the investigation.

Editor's note: Police originally reported the baby's age as 9 months. The story now reflects the child's correct age of 5 months.
