ORU's Megan Giles picked up her fourth goal of the season a little over a minute into double-overtime, earning the Golden Eagles a 2-1 victory against Nicholls State on Sunday.
It was just the latest addition to a building resume of clutch plays for Giles this season. Her goal on Sunday was her fourth game-winning goal of the year.
Earning the assist on the deciding goal was Jennifer Abernathy. Abernathy set up Giles goal on a breakaway as the two caught the Nicholls State keeper out of position, scoring from the right side.
In the first half, the Colonels struck first in the match, scoring their lone goal in the 24th minute off the foot of Kristy Tatom off a cross pass.
Despite entering the locker room looking up at the Colonels on the scoreboard, the Golden Eagles still controlled much of the first half. They held a 6-2 shot advantage in the first 45 minutes, two of which were on goal.
Abernathy also had her hand in the first goal of the afternoon for Oral Roberts, setting up a strike by Kayla Keller. Her two assists bring Abernathy's total to five on the year, tying her for the team lead with Giles.
ORU keeper Helen Erb recorded two saves in the first extra period and one with seven seconds remaining in regulation. She finished with five saves route to her ninth victory of the year.
The Golden Eagles (10-4-2, 4-1-0) are back at home for their final two-match home stand of the season on Friday and Sunday, as they host Lamar and Southeastern Louisiana, respectively.
