The Tulsa men's soccer team tied Memphis, 2-2, in double overtime on Saturday night at the Mike Rose Stadium in Memphis, Tenn. TU moved to 8-4-1 on the season and 2-1-1 in Conference USA, while the Tigers moved to 4-5-3 overall and 0-1-2 in the league.
"I thought in the first half we were a little sluggish, and we didn't connect like we needed to," Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. "We still created a couple good chances, and got one from Cristian. It just took us too long to get into the game. They did well at what they do, and I thought Memphis played well. In the second half we defended better and scored a nice goal. Both teams had chances in the second half and overtime periods and we grinded it out. Sometimes you just have to grind out a point and we found a way to do that tonight. Now we have to get ready for UAB."
Cristian Mata scored his 10th goal of the season at the 16:38 mark off a rebound attempt by Tony Rocha, but 10 minutes later Mark Sherrod evened the score as he headed in a free kick by Liam Collins. Sherrod earned the go-ahead goal in the 41st minute to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead at the break.
Bryce Follensbee once again tied the score as he headed in a goal from the right side off a cross from Akeil Barrett with 52:52 on the clock. Neither team scored in the following 57 minutes to end the game in a tie.
Memphis had a 17-14 lead in shots, while Tulsa had a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal, and the Tigers had a 9-1 lead in corner kicks.
Tulsa will return to action against UAB on Tuesday, October 16th in Birmingham, Ala.
